Singer/songwriter/guitar-shredder Annie Clark's fourth studio album as St. Vincent is, simply, her best yet. While her catalog is full of twists and turns, including 2013 David Byrne collaboration Love This Giant, this self-titled release is both audacious and accessible, a canny balancing of Clark's experimental leanings with her pop sensibility. Amid a flurry of sonic textures ranging from the clamoring horn section of "Digital Witness" to the subdued balladry of "Prince Johnny," Clark critiques our technology-obsessed culture ("Huey Newton"), satirizes suburban ennui ("Birth in Reverse"), and shares about her love for her mother ("I Prefer Your Love"). Her anxieties laid bare, the songwriter asserts herself via pyrotechnic guitar riffs, rhythmic somersaults, and a wayfaring vocal range, resulting in a vertiginous set that's as dizzying as it is captivating.

Big, bold, and baroque, Florence + The Machine's debut album thrives on drama. Built around the effortless sweep of Florence Welch's voice, and the delicate trills of the harp, it proudly lays its emotions bare, barreling between suffocating lust on “Drumming Song,” debilitating fear on “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up),” and the pain of heartbreak on the breathless “Cosmic Love." But Welch also understands the power of redemption: She closes with a rousing version of The Source and Candi Staton's “You've Got the Love.”

Between 1998 and 2000, DMX was one of the biggest rappers on the planet. His reign was brief but spectacular and The Best of DMX chronicles that period. After toiling for years in obscurity, DMX broke through to the big time in 1998 with “Get At Me Dog,” and the song defined the formula that would make him a superstar. DMX could evoke the vicious excitement and ferocity of an underground dogfight and also make it palatable for the pop market. Because of his pulpit-pounding fervor, he could turn almost any phrase into an anthem. He was a master at hooks, and his tenacious delivery made huge hits out of “Party Up,” “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and “Where the Hood At.” Though he became famous for his all-out aggression, The Best of DMX is a good reminder of how potent he was in the rare song that paired him with a low-key beat, as on “It’s All Good,” “Slippin’” and “How’s It Goin’ Down.” In addition to highlighting DMX’s career, this collection of hits works as a time capsule of rap in the late ‘90s, when the dominant sound was menacing yet clean, macho yet charming, and violent yet danceable.

Think of the roll-up as a revolutionary blow against the empire or the supernova ego of West in full effect, and while it's probably a little of both, Yeezus the album is a lot of both, with good taste and bad taste both turned up to 11.

Entering with a James Brown-inspired shriek, singer Brittany Howard is front and center on the group’s second album, Sound & Color, which channels Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, and funky ’70s soul-jazz. While any Alabama Shakes record will live and die by Howard's emotion-packed pipes, this one brings a broader palette to the band's sound. From the smooth-soul vibes and strings of the title track and the snap-tight funk of "Don't Wanna Fight" to the barnstorming blues-rock of "Dunes," the band broadens its horizons while staying true to its soul-rock roots.

Crafting ethereal electronic R&B that evokes the heyday of Tricky and Massive Attack and the spare 2010s aesthetic of the xx, London's FKA twigs is the project of Twigs, aka Tahliah Barnett, a half-Jamaican native of Gloucestershire. Surrounded by farmland during her teens, she studied ballet and sang on tracks recorded at a studio in a Jamaican youth club.

"Hells Bells" sets a mournful tone with its slow, ominous build, but once Johnson leans into the mic, the band is back in business. From there on out, it's a masterful metal adventure that features some of the heaviest and most fist-pumping music of their career, including "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and the tune that's probably inspired more late-night sing-alongs than any other, "You Shook Me All Night Long."

Though he was born in Chicago, the DJ, A&R director, record store owner, and producer known as Kaskade found his spiritual and musical home in San Francisco by way of Salt Lake City and New York. One of the hardest-working people in the San Francisco house scene, he's Kaskade the house music producer/DJ by night; by day he's Ryan Raddon, A&R director for OM Records. As an A&R man, he helped kick-start the careers of many artists, including Ming + FS and soul-house act Soulstice. In the early days, Kaskade familiarized himself with the rapidly changing electronic music scene wherever he went, eventually finding that house music was the subgenre he loved best. He started out as a DJ in New York and Salt Lake City clubs. During the tail-end of his stay in Salt Lake City, his first attempts to produce tracks were released on his own tiny label, Mechanized Records. He also sold a few tracks to Chris Smith, A&R director for an up-and-coming house label in San Francisco. Though no one could have predicted it, this ended up being the precursor to Raddon's most important career move. When family matters initiated a move to San Francisco, Smith hired Raddon to assist him at the label -- which was, of course, OM. His own full-length recordings as Kaskade began with 2003's house-inflected It's You, It's Me. A soulful, more organic direction provided focus for the following year's In the Moment, and Raddon kept his name in the record racks by piloting editions in the San Francisco Sessions DJ series (as well as the label mix House of OM). He proved surprisingly dedicated to his production craft, releasing Love Mysterious in 2006, which placed on Billboard's electronic albums chart. Strobelight Seduction became his biggest commercial success, following in 2008, and 2010's Dynasty celebrated his new reputation with a parade of vocal features and a co-production with Tiësto. Later in 2010, Raddon put together Electric Daisy Carnival, a mix showcasing artists on the bill for the inaugural dance-music festival of the same name. The double album Fire & Ice followed in 2011 with a guest appearance from Skrillex. Atmosphere arrived two years later and featured softer, more relaxed music along with vocals from Kaskade himself. After the 2014 compilation I Remember rounded up the best of his years on Ultra, the DJ renewed his contract with the label and released Automatic. A conceptual EDM act based around a fictional character, Major Lazer launched in 2008 as the digital reggae/dancehall project of Diplo, the globetrotting, tastemaking DJ/producer whose previous collaborations included work for M.I.A. and Santigold. Recorded at Jamaica's Tuff Gong studios, Major Lazer's debut album, Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do, featured producer Switch as a member. Vocal contributions came from noted dancehall stars including Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, Mr. Vegas, and Turbulence, as well as Santigold, Nina Sky, and rapper Amanda Blank. Much anticipation and online chatter were fueled in part by the novelty video/song "Zumbi," featuring the comedian Andy Milonakis, the frenetic, legitimate lead single "Hold the Line," and a goofy, invented back-story about a renegade Jamaican commando with prosthetic laser arms who was allegedly a Zombie War veteran and vampire-fighting C.I.A. operative (but was demonstrably a rampant Twitter user). The album was released in June of 2009 as a joint venture between Downtown Records and Diplo's Mad Decent label. Lazers Never Die, an EP with two new songs and three remixes, followed in 2010, along with Lazerproof, a collaborative mixtape with the English electropop duo La Roux. In 2012, Snoop Dogg joined Diplo for the digital reggae single "La La La," released under the name Snoop Lion, while Switch announced he was leaving the project. Diplo carried on with producer Jillionaire, joining the group for Free the Universe, the group's sophomore album. The 2013 release featured Wyclef, Bruno Mars, Vybz Kartel, and Shaggy on its long guest list. Sean Paul and Pharrell Williams joined the party for the 2014 EP Apocalypse Soon. The 2015 album Peace Is the Mission featured the massive hit "Lean On" plus chart-topping guests like Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and 2 Chainz.
