The herringbone pattern is an arrangement of rectangles used for floor tilings, so named for a fancied resemblance to the bones of a fish such as a herring. The blocks can be rectangles or parallelograms. The block edge length ratios are usually 2:1, and sometimes 3:1, but need not be even ratios.

Josef Hoffmann started studying classic architecture in Brunn. From there he studied architecture under Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer at the Academy of Fine arts in Vienna. At that time, von Hasenauer was one of Europe's most popular architects. After von Hasenauer's death, Otto Wagner, Europe's most famous 19th century architect took over the class. Josef Hoffmann went onto work for Wagner later in his career. Spanish designer Pepe Cortés spent years designing furniture for restaurants and studying how items are used in contract settings. Mies van der Rohe’s MR chairs were designed in 1927 for the Weissenholf housing development project along with Mart Stam’s cantilever chair.  The chair uses a small gauge tubular steel frame that retained a certain amount spring providing extra added comfort to the clean design.  The chairs are part of the MR series of seating that exhibit Mies van der Rohe’s first use of bent tubular steel in its design.  It is a marvelous example of Mies’ use of a single closed structural line.

That Ghost is still in production some 23 years after its debut is the proof in this particular pudding. The design is simple enough: a quartet of graceful bends creates arms and seat both, while the aperture created by said manipulations forms space for the chair’s back support. But the real miracle of Ghost is its execution: formed from a single sheet of ½” thick glass, Ghost has been molded into a structurally-sound shape capable of supporting up to 320 lbs. The aesthetic of the piece gives new meaning to the term “negative space.”’

CIM Group and Macklowe Properties have now unveiled a model penthouse home at 432 Park Avenue in Midtown. The unit was designed by Robert Couturier and sits on the building's 86th floor at a staggering height of 1,132 feet. As we many of us already know, the tower soars to 1,396 feet in all, topping out at 96 floors earning the building the title of the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere.
